The ‘Drink Detective’ FAQ PageQuestion: Why should people carry the ‘Drink Detective’? Answer: There are many important reasons why lots of people should carry the 'Drink Detective'. Right now drink spiking is a risk free crime. Victims cannot fight back and have no memory of what happened. Even if a woman wakes up and realizes that she has been raped, by the time she gets to the police the drug will have left her system (GHB leaves in about 12 hours). Thus, there is no witness, no evidence and, therefore, no conviction. But if large numbers of drinkers carried the 'Drink Detective', the potential rapist couldn't be sure who would use it. If he were caught, the penalty could be prison or in some bars he could end up being attacked. The crime would no longer be risk free and the incidence of drug rape would surely decrease. Awareness is the all-important link not only for potential victims to identify the need to carry the 'Drink Detective' but also for the perpetrators, who, faced with such awareness and seeing the display of promotional material in a bar would surely not attempt an attack. Question: There are several tests out there and they don’t all work. How do I know which test, if any, is effective? Answer: There are only two tests available in the UK (or anywhere else) that claim to test for drug-rape drugs: ours and the product of Drink Safe Technologies. We test for all such drugs, they test only for GHB and Ketamine and theirs works only on high concentrations. Test results showing comparisons are available, please contact us. Question: Alcohol is the most abused drug used in drug rape. Shouldn’t we be concentrating on that? Answer: Of course. Alcohol will always be used to incapacitate a woman to the point where she cannot resist a sexual advance. But it is really about choices. If a woman chooses to drink so much alcohol that she loses control, it’s her choice. She certainly doesn’t deserve to be raped or robbed or in any way punished for making a bad choice. But she has made the choice. No one chooses to be drugged. The ‘Drink Detective’ can help a woman avoid taking a spiked drink. In the real sense the DD will empower a woman to take control of her drinking environment. In addition, while alcohol is the most prevalent "drug" around, it is not the most dangerous. An alcoholic drink spiked with GHB, Ketamine, or a Benzodiazepines can be fatal. Ketamine, for example, is taken intentionally because it brings one a "near death experience" known to the cognoscenti as a "K-hole". Helping people to avoid a spiked drink could prevent serious illness or death. Question: What about people spiking drinks with extra alcohol by, for example, triple shots instead of a single? Answer: The ‘Drink Detective’ doesn’t pick up extra alcohol; no test does. But we question how serious this problem really is. We have spoken to publicans who tell us that most drinkers would quickly detect a triple shot. In any event, this does not obviate the need to be able to test for the more dangerous drugs. Question: Suppose that the drink is tested and it comes out negative. There still might be other dangerous drugs in the drink. Answer: You are right. On our test we stress that we test only for the known drug-rape drugs: GHB, Ketamine, and the benzos. We say that a negative test doesn’t mean that your drink is safe - only that the drug-rape drugs are not present. The kits come with tips for safe drinking and these should always be observed. The best defence against drink spiking is awareness, and having the ‘Drink Detective’ widely available with the posters in sight will certainly make people more aware of the dangers of drink spiking.
