Drug Rape and Date Rape Drugs - continued...

Drug rape is a major problem in the UK. According to the Roofie Foundation, there were almost 1,000 cases reported on their help-line in 2003 and this number continues to rise. The actual number of cases is certainly much greater: no-one knows how many cases of drug rape and sexual abuse go unreported because many victims do not remember what happened. Moreover, people spike drinks for other reasons such as revenge, robbery, theft, assault, extortion or just for amusement.
Men account for around 15% of reported drug rape victims and can be victims of any of the drink spiking crimes. Drink spiking can occur anywhere that drinks are served, including pubs, clubs, restaurants and even private homes.
For the perpetrator drug rape is an almost risk-free crime. Victims become partially incapacitated and often have no memory of what occurred. Even if they do realise what happened, all traces of the offending drug will probably have left their system before they seek help from the police.
The Drink Detective will empower women and men to take control of their drinking environment. The test is designed in matchbook form with three test pads detecting one of GHB, Benzodiazepines or Ketamine. To perform a test the drinker uses the pipette supplied to apply drops of the beverage to designated spots and observes the reaction. Each of the tests is designed to detect the minimum concentration of a drug that can incapacitate.

What is drug assisted assault?

Drug assisted sexual assault is a crime associated with drink spiking in which a drug is put into a drink without the drinker's knowledge. The drugs used are easily slipped into a drink. They are fast-acting, readily available sedatives and euphoriants that produce amnesia often causing the victim to co-operate with the criminal, whatever he or she demands.
The amnesia effect means that the victim is unable to recall many details of the attack and left with only the faintest memory of what happened. Sometimes more traces of memory may come back as flashbacks or nightmares.
These drugs can also be used to gather financial information such as PIN numbers, which opens the victim to robbery, blackmail and fraud. There are also many cases reported where spiked drinks have been used for purposes other than sexual abuse and rape. These range from revenge, amusement, malevolence or to aid robbery. Everyone male or female is a potential victim.
The drugs used in drug rape include Benzodiazepine's, especially flunitrazepam (better known as Rohypnol ®, gamma-hydroxy butyrate (GHB) and Ketamine. Perpetrators choose these drugs because they act rapidly, quickly producing loss of inhibitions and relaxation of voluntary muscles. The victim will also experience lasting amnesia for many events that occur during the effect of the drug.
